Burnet Youth Football earns impressive wins, ready for next games

The Burnet Youth Football teams had some big wins against Leander Glenn Sept. 17 while the freshmen lost to Fredericksburg 13-0.

Burnet’s junior varsity defeated Glenn 14-7, the fifth-graders rompled to a 26-0 win, and the sixth-graders steamrolled 34-0.

“They all played well,” BYFL president Grant Murray said.

He noted the junior varsity changed its offense and the players executed it perfectly.

“They changed the offense a little bit to score more,” he said. “They ran the ball better than they have been. This is their first weekend to score a touchdown. They ran the power I to more of a wing-T. They moved the ball better by changing it up.”

The Bulldogs led 14-0 until the Grizzlies scored in the last couple of minutes.

Fifth-grade quarterback Ace Ingram continues to impress, Murray said.

“He’s putting points on the board as a quarterback,” he said. “He was the highlight. The defense stood up. They shored up the middle.”

The sixth-graders earned their first win of the season led by running back Ethan Sanchez.

“They had a really good plan,” the president said. “We got up on them early. We led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ethan is as shifty runner and very fast. This was a great opportunity to play second- or third-string kids we’re trying to get to play in a lot of games, … which is great.”

The freshmen, which consists of first- and second-graders, is about learning for the players and the coaches, Murray said.

“We have some great dads helping,” he said. “I don’t think a lot of kids played flag football before. They had a better weekend than the week before. We’re going to keep putting them through the drills.”

All four Burnet teams are hosting games Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bulldog Field, 1400 Bulldog Stadium Drive. The freshmen welcome Marble Falls at 9 a.m., while the junior varsity faces Lampasas Blue at 10:30 a.m. The fifth-graders host Smithson Valley Blue at noon and the sixth-graders welcome Lampasas Blue at 1:30 p.m.
